Practice for the test Buffalo uses to rank City Honors and Olmsted applicants
Buffalo ranks applicants on three things: a general ability test, the cumulative report card in the four core subjects, and the cumulative attendance record. This app is practice for the first one.
An ability test is not a test of what you studied, so there is nothing here to memorize. What practice actually buys you is format familiarity and pacing. Most points get lost when a question type is unfamiliar and the first two minutes go to figuring out what is even being asked. Every question type below appears once, so none of them are a surprise on the day.
How to use this without wearing her out
Fifteen to twenty minutes, three times a week, for six to eight weeks. Past that you get diminishing returns and a kid who resents the whole thing, which costs more on test day than the extra practice earns. Drill the weak type, not the whole test, and save the full timed run for once every week or two.
The nonverbal three (figure matrices, paper folding, figure classification) are the least school-like and the most improvable, so they usually deserve the most time. Paper folding especially. Most students have never done one on paper in their lives.
One rule worth drilling harder than any content: if you are stuck, guess and move. Nothing is subtracted for a wrong answer, so a blank at the end of a subtest is a guaranteed zero where a guess is a one in five.
What the scores here mean
Percent correct on practice questions, and nothing more. This app cannot produce a percentile, a stanine, or an age score, because those require a norm group of thousands of real students. Use the per-subtest breakdown to find the weak spot. Do not read a number here as a prediction of anything.
About this app
Buffalo's application calls the exam a General Ability Test and does not publish which instrument it uses, the cut scores, or any sample items. This is independent practice material written from the publicly documented structure of general ability tests: three batteries, nine question types, roughly ten minutes each. Every question in here is original and generated fresh. Nothing is copied from, derived from, or reproduced out of any published test, and this app is not affiliated with or endorsed by Buffalo Public Schools, City Honors, or any test publisher.
